Message The auto builds boost at the beginning of the run and keeps that boost up throughout the run. Therefore you are running very close to your peak HP throughout the run. The 5 speed on the other hand loses boost after each shift and must build it back up during the next gear. Therefore its power output is much lower than yours at the beginning of the gear and slightly higher at the end of the gear... it fluctuates greatly throughout the run.

I think if you were to take an *average* HP output throughout the run, the auto would be putting out more HP on average. The 5 speed, while producing more peak HP, on average does not put out as much HP throughout the run due to the fact that it cannot keep the boost level up throughout the run.

That's why you see the real fast guys using those old 2 speed powerglide trannys... they may not be the most efficient transmissions out there, but they make good use of the torque converter to allow the engine to run at its peak HP output rpm throughout the run.
